Born in Glasgow, but settling in the village of Eaglesham, he studied at Glasgow School of Art, 1940 - 42 and 1946 - 48, interrupted by the war when he served in the Royal Air Force. His teachers include David Donaldson, Hugh Adam Crawford and Ian Fleming.

Martin describes his work as being "derived from landscape that explores the rhythmic lines and its related shapes which are sometimes echoed in other areas of the painting. This sometimes leads to a simplified statement bordering on abstraction, which is the quality of landscape which interests me".

Regarded by many as one of the finest still life and landscape painters working in Scotland today, David Martin's work is held in many major public collections including The Arts Council of Scotland, The City of Edinburgh Art Collection, Perth Museum and Art Gallery, The Dick Institute, Kilmarnock and Robert Fleming and Company Ltd, London.

Martin has also exhibited at annual exhibitions both in Scotland and London including the Royal Academy. He also had a solo exhibition at the celebrated Stone Gallery, Newcastle in 1965 and in 1999, Perth Museum and Art Gallery organised a major retrospective of his work.
